Why not Try Fruit Antioxidants?
18/08/08
The term antioxidant refers to a group of compounds found in everyday substances like plants which have health giving benefits to help fight disease. Found in various forms in fruits and vegetables, they contain nutrients that work with our own nutrients to combat many common but serious illnesses in addition to disease. So far scientists have cataloged over nine hundred phytonutrients (phytochemicals),more are being discovered all the time and the whole area of nutrition and preventative health care is opening up. To date a large number of health giving benefits of these phytonutrients have been found, the anti-aging power of blueberries and the effect that cherries have on reducing joint pain, are just two of the benefits found so far.
The humble blueberry (famous for homemade pies) has very low sugar content while having many antioxidants that are good for our health. Often the easiest way for people to take fruit is in juice form which are readily available all year round, many benefits have been found including an improvement in our circulatory system and an increase in our own ability to ward of illness. The other properties of antioxidants include the ability to fight disease as well. The health benefits of apples are now being researched with a reduced chance of coronary disease being one of these.
The likes of many citrus fruits also have health benefits associated with the phytochemicals they contain. Tart cherries for instance have a number of properties which work together to help people who have arthritis, gout and fibromyalgia. Other substances, vitaminsdiary and minerals for instance, are also being studied more carefully even though their benefits are well documented. A large group of common berries also contain specialized antioxidants called Phytoalexins (resveratrol),
These amazing compounds seem to benefit the elderly with many properties that help reduce conditions found in aging like Alzheimer’s, heart disease, blood pressure and stoke. Others found in tomatoes make this one super-food in the prevention of heart disease. However, it is now recognized that the best way to receive a sufficient quantity of the antioxidants contained in a tomato is by having it as a puree in a dish using tomato sauce or as a juice. More recently the refreshing watermelon has been discovered to contain some of the most beneficial phytonutrients yet seen. We are told to eat more fruit and now there is a very good scientific reason to do this.
